Lose-Lose, or Win-Win?

Sarah Silverman just said it right on The View this morning, “If there were a million dogs in shelters in Africa, we would solve the problem in 4 days.”

This was after the ladies asked if now that she is 40, does she still want to have kids? She said she would like to adopt one day, but isn’t interested in being pregnant. When asked why, she stated how people always complain when someone buys a dog from a breeder, when there are thousands of dogs in shelters that need homes. She agreed, but didn’t like how people put more emphasis on animals than humans.

This issue has bothered me ever since I started looking for my little sunshine, Miss Kona Behr, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. People got on my case for getting her from a breeder, when there are several dogs in shelters that need homes. I replied, or at least wanted to, by saying, “Okay then, when you have kids, I’m going to ask you why you would ever have your own child, when there are millions of kids in orphanages around the world that need homes.” Same, or even, better difference!

Yes, I bought my dog from a breeder. However I did over a month of research, reaching out to 60+ breeders in the area to make sure she would come from someone responsible. I wanted a puppy, and I wanted to make sure she was of healthy bloodlines, because I didn’t have the income to support an unhealthy dog for the next 10 years. I also live in a 1br apartment, and did not want a dog that would be barking all day long, and this particular breed presented a manageable demeanor. I do believe in keeping the integrity of dog breeds, because there can be so many health problems that arise. I of course do not believe in puppy mills, or pet stores, by any means! The fact that they are legal, disgusts me, along with several other issues.

Having said this, once I do move into an actual house, with a yard outside and a steady income, I still plan to have many more dogs and yes, hopefully adopt them! I also hope to have 2 of my own children to “pass on the genes”, and again, also adopt as many as financially/mentally/emotionally/physically possible! But then people will probably be on my case for “just adopting”, and not saving all of the orphans and solving all the problems.

It’s a lose-lose situation I suppose, or… a WIN-WIN! Yes, why don’t we all mind our own damn businesses, stop worrying so much about what other people are doing in their lives, and concentrate on our own lives being the best possible? Sounds good to me.
