Two weeks ago I started “juicing” again. No, not steroids silly. Green juicing! My husband and I had done it most of the summer last year, but once winter approached and organic fruit/vegetables started getting harder to find, we kind of fell out of the routine. I hope to make it a way of life from now on, not just a phase. I also don’t use it as an excuse to eat bad the rest of the day though. I continue to strive to eat a healthy, conscious diet.

I love juicing for three main reasons:

1) To Detox My Body: Between eating more organic vegetables and hot yoga (which I don’t get to do nearly as often as I’d prefer, due to far proximity and rising gas prices), I feel I can detox my body naturally of any chemicals or built-up toxins daily.

2) To Balance My PH Levels: You may have read my earlier posts regarding the incredible benefits of eating alkaline-rich foods, which you can see here and here. Since I still believe in eating some acidic, yet organic, foods such as yogurt, meat, fish, and grains, I feel it necessary to make sure I’m eating just as much, if not more, plant based, alkaline foods.

3) To Get My Necessary Nutrition Naturally: I’m not sold on the idea of a young, “healthy” person having to take a multi-vitamin everyday just to be healthy. My “should voice” and some minor research has led me to believe God wouldn’t create us with the necessity to ingest man-made supplements, as long as we are treating our bodies with respect by only eating food from the Earth. Yes, we all have bad food days, and it wouldn’t hurt to take a natural multi-vitamin to help supplement on those days, but I don’t feel we should be relying on daily supplements either. I do realize some people unfortunately have health issues that require them to take supplements or medicine to be healthy. I always believe in a time and a place for modern medicine and science. Every living person on every single day is not the proper time and place though.

Not only do I feel healthier, but I also feel it starts my metabolism off right! I naturally want to eat small meals continuously throughout the day, instead of three large meals that are harder to digest. You can vary the recipe anyway you see fit for your own diet or preferences.

Anna Zoe’s Green Juice Recipe
Serving Size: 2

2 apples
2 carrots
1/2 inch of ginger
6 medium-sized broccoli florets
1 medium-sized cucumber
1 large handful of spinach or kale
2 tbsp. Wheatgrass powder
1 tbsp. coconut oil
1 tbsp. ground flaxseed
Juice of 1 lime
Juice of 1 lemon
1/2 cup water
*Be sure to wash fruit/vegetable with veggie wash, and peel the skin off if it is not organic.
**You may also add yogurt and berries if you’d like. I prefer to eat a yogurt parfait an hour or two later once I get hungry again.

Blend all ingredients together and enjoy!

What If Our Bodies Were Meant To Be On Permanent Vacation?

As I sit here with a hot rice bag hanging on my neck and shoulders, relaxing a stiff neck and headache, I wonder what it all really means. I just got back yesterday from an amazing group vacation to Mexico with my best friends from high school for a wedding. The resort was all-inclusive and huge, therefore, lots of eating fresh, local, delicious food and lots of walking. In between that, there was of course some, or a lot of, drinking, and hanging out with good company in the hot sun. I’m not trying to brag, I swear there is a point to all this.

What I did notice though, is how amazingly refreshed we all felt (even if hungover) every morning. Those with any regular insomnia issues, actually caught a little sleep, if not more, and we all raved over the comfort of the beds; and my husband and I loved the big, thick, down pillows. Most of us went back to our rooms anywhere between 10-1am, and were at breakfast somewhere between 7-10am. I typically suffer from neck and back aches, which I attribute mostly to sitting at a computer in a slouching position most days. I didn’t feel the need to crack my neck or back once throughout our stay.

After one day of being home, having to go back to the harsh reality of sitting at a computer and the stress of real life, I disturbingly wake up early today, in an awkward and painful position, to a nightmare. I roll over onto my back, try to straighten out my neck, and get a little more sleep in a better position. An hour later, I’m up and feel quite crappy.

So I sit here and wonder what it all really means. Is it the bed? Is it the food? Is it the lack of sun-shine? Is it the computer chair? Is it the solitude? Is it the lack of exercise? Is it the stress? Is it all of the above?

What if our bodies were meant to be on permanent vacation? But in order to have housing, food, and clothes, we need money, right? And to have money, we need to work, right? How do we treat our bodies to a permanent vacation, without actually being on one? If anyone has any sort of answers, I’d love to hear them. ;)

Exposing Kashi Cereal For The Poison That It Is

Kashi, owned by Kellogg, has recently been found to be using genetically modified (GM) and pesticide loaded ingredients. Just another reason to not only support organic, but support companies who were founded on the ideals of organic farming, and not in any way related to or sold out to larger non-organic companies. If you don’t, you’re just supporting a larger company who doesn’t give a damn about your health and well-being, but instead making the most money.

Alkaline Cures Part 2

A couple weeks ago I posted about the Acid vs. Alkaline theory (click here for the post) possibly preventing cancer, disease, and even morning sickness. Today I came across another video and article supporting the idea of eating more Alkaline rich foods to balance your Ph levels, and possibly warding off health issues, but it also discussed the possible adverse effects of drinking only Alkaline water, because it is not “natural”. Having it in moderation doesn’t seem to pose any threats to one’s health, if anything it helps, but the concern is drinking only Alkaline water could throw off the balance of your Ph levels if you already eat a healthy Alkaline-rich diet. Sounds to me like “moderation is key”, and if you’re eating a fresh diet and drinking adequate amounts of “live” water (fresh mineral spring water), as opposed to processed foods/drinks, you won’t need to balance your Ph levels to begin with. I’m no Doctor though, so please don’t just take my word for it, do the research too!
