Doing what you love is the cornerstone of having abundance in your life.
Tell your heart that the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. And that no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.
Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.
You can do anything, but not everything.
When the eyes say one thing, and the tongue another, a practiced man relies on the language of the first.
Try not to be a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.
Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
If you wish to achieve worthwhile things in your personal and career life, you must become a worthwhile person in your own self-development.
When I was a senior in high school, I knew I wanted to be a professional musician and move to NYC. While my parents didn’t support this decision 100%, they knew there was no talking me out of it, so they had to make some compromises. I was never one, and still am not, for going to school and taking exams. While I love to learn new things about interesting subjects, I’m a horrible test taker and I just get nervous forgetting anything I ever learned. My parents pretty much bribed me into going to college while living in NYC by offering to pay my room and board.
At the time, there was a lot of pressure to “have a back up plan”. While I sympathize with this train of thought, I always knew I didn’t need it, because I truly believe if you have the passion, drive, and work ethic, you can accomplish anything. Needless to say, I convinced myself that if I was going to spend the time and money on going to college, I didn’t want to study music, because I felt I might as well study something else in case I ever changed my mind. Little did I realize at the time that I could still study something productive toward being a professional musician AND be able to still get a real job if I changed careers. I don’t believe in having regrets in life, but if I did, that would be one of them.
I was interested in nutrition, but didn’t want to study it because too much science was involved, and it wasn’t my strong suit. I decided to study Communication Arts with a concentration in Business. I did get an overall look into the world of Entertainment and Business, but honestly I don’t think any more than had I just studied on my own free time.
If I were a senior in high school right now, with aspirations of being a professional musician but wanting to go to college for something involving music that I could get a “real job” in if I had to, this is a list of choices that I would now choose from to major in that would help me much more in my career today as an independent musician:
-music theory
-music business
-music marketing
-music production
-songwriting
-graphic/web design*
-audio engineering*
*These would be my top 2 choices since they are not nearly as easy or affordable to research and teach on your own time.
Remember, hindsight is always 20/20 and who know the music industry would be where it is today?
Good luck kids!
People begin to become successful the minute they decide to be.
