Three Foods For A Healthier Child

I get rather disgusted over what some parents feed their children, and I realize not everyone can afford all-fresh food, let alone all-organic, but here are three simple changes a parent can easily make that could help with any behavioral or bodily issues in their kids, and not to mention, their own self. Also, just because a health issue isn’t prevalent now, does not mean diet isn’t effecting future health issues!

How The Dugger's Support 19 Kids And Live Debt-Free

I know a lot of people look down on The Dugger’s for bringing so many children into an already over-populated world. I get it. But, that is their choice and right, and if they do so responsibly, I have no qualms about it! The majority of their way of life sounds like common sense, but unfortunately is not so common these days. The only part I disagree with in this article is about never using credit cards, because we personally save money by using credit cards. We never spend more in a month than we can pay off and use our points to pay for flights, or other purchases like the Mac desktop I’m using at this very moment!

I spent all day yesterday watching my adorable nephews. I’m currently living on a dairy farm in a small town, so when I was trying to think of something we could do other than taking yet another walk in the mud, or more coloring, or another movie, I was kind of at a loss. I then completely understood why so many moms become DIY crafters! I’m on a mission today to do something crafty with them without spending any money. I’m smelling homemade non-toxic play dough in our future…

Sweet Stories of Faith, Hope, and Love in Loss

As many of you know, in October 2010, I spent a week with a group of children at the Hogar Rafael Ayau orphanage in Guatemala City who have experienced things in their short lives that no person should ever experience. Their joyous and gracious spirits touched my heart forever, and helped strengthen my hope for humanity.

For those who don’t know, this past week 12-year-old Adriana became ill and passed away. I had met her, and regardless how well I got to know her, or any of the children for that matter, any more tragedies they have to endure simply breaks my heart. The children, staff, and nuns at the Hogar are one large family and like any family, a loss is never easy.

I came across two stories Madre Maria recently shared that touched my heart and hopefully it can help anyone else going through a loss:

-For one whole week, Adriana was lovingly cared for by her big sister Reina until the day she was rushed to the hospital for emergency. That night, Reina dreamt of her little sister inviting her to take a walk at the Hogar park. While walking together, Adriana told Reina, “I will be well!!!” And Reina assured her, “You will be well!!!” Early morning the next day, Adriana slept in the Lord peacefully.

-On the night of the wake, our dear Adriana was kept company by our older kids who freely chose to stay all night until dawn in Church taking turns on their own in reading the 150 psalms over and over again, singing the eight tones and other liturgical songs they know by heart!!! It is truly a grace to witness the strong and solid faith of these kids in their grief. And it is indeed beautiful to see how their faith transforms their human grief into paschal joy!!! BIG IS GOD!!!!!!!!!!!

As most of you know, in October 2010 I visited the Hogar Rafael Ayau orphanage in Guatemala City, and footage from it is seen in my “Someday” music video. Here is a great video further discussing the history, inner workings, and current needs of the orphanage. Let this time of year remind us to give of ourselves to those desperately in need of the basic living essentials!
